Contrary to popular opinion, it isn’t natural or normal for a child to dislike learning. Children are born explorers who actively learn from the world around them. As a child enters elementary school, however, this may start to change if the conventional classroom stifles the child’s curiosity by requiring that he or she do the same exercises at the same pace as the rest of the class. Montessori schools are different—they offer child-led and curiosity-fueled education that guides students in becoming self-motivated achievers.
A dynamic, effective education doesn’t involve memorizing long lists of facts, as this doesn’t teach students how to think. True learning requires critical thinking and problem solving. And in order to be genuinely engaged in learning concepts , students need to have their interest piqued. In a Montessori classroom, students direct their own education, within certain limits. If a student becomes engrossed in long division, the classroom guide lets the student work uninterrupted until he or she is finished—rather telling the student that it’s time to move on to another assignment.
Another common reason why students grow to dread going to traditional schools is that they are required to cover the material at the same pace as every other student. Montessori schools provide individualized education. Students only move on to the next lesson when they have fully grasped the concepts presented in the previous one. As a result, no student ever falls behind. Students who grasp material more quickly can move on to the next lesson, without becoming frustrated about any delays.
Supportive Social Setting
Bullying is a serious problem of epidemic proportions in most school systems around the country. When children are fearful of going to school, they can’t learn well, and their emotional health suffers. Montessori classrooms are supportive communities, in which every child knows that respect and courtesy are required at all times.
